The Providence Athenaeum, a private not-for-profit membership library with a rich and vibrant history dating back to 1753, seeks an experienced grants writer. This part-time contract position reports to the Executive Director, and is responsible for the full range of activities required to prepare, submit, and manage grant proposals. Job responsibilities include but are not limited to managing the entire grants process from initial “letter of inquiry” to final funding and reporting.

JOB SUMMARY: This is a part-time contracted services position aimed to meet both the short and long-term organizational, programmatic and financial goals of the organization. Responsible for conducting the full range of activities required to prepare, submit, and manage grant proposals to foundation, corporate and government sources.
NATURE AND SCOPE OF POSITION: Responsible for all aspects of raising support from foundations, corporations, and government sources. An understanding and appreciation for institutional history and programs is essential.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
•Perform prospect research on foundations and corporations to evaluate prospects for corporate and foundation grants
•Prepare letters of inquiry, proposals, and contracts to new and existing foundations
•Formulate budgets to support funding proposals with input from the finance and development department as necessary; collaborate with the Business Manager on all restricted grant applications
•Manage existing grants by: tracking grants; developing internal reporting systems; writing reports, maintaining excellent historical records, working with staff to ensure each project or program is meeting proposal conditions and expectations
•Work with the Development Office to effectively communicate progress on goals and initiatives to donors
•Assist with other fundraising projects as requested

1.Knowledge & Skills Requirements: Proven grant writing experience and familiarity with non-profit fundraising, ability to write clear, structured, articulate, and persuasive proposals. Strong editing skills, attention to detail, demonstrated ability to work both independently and as part of a team; superior organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; professional attitude and strong work ethic.
2.Supervisory Controls: Specific task oriented work subject to general administrative supervision from the Executive Director.
3.Difficulty of Work: Must have flexibility to work simultaneously on a number of projects while meeting complex deadlines.
4.Scope and Effect: Quality, accuracy, and income potential of work has a direct and fundamental impact on the organization.
5.Nature of Personal Contacts: Contact with members of the Athenaeum, members of the Board of Directors and library committees, donors, foundations, corporations, the general public, municipal and government officials, media, civic and community leaders and groups, state agencies, etc.
6.Work Environment and Physical Demands: Work is performed in a library environment. The work involves standing, stooping, walking, and climbing stairs.
