I like the think of the internet as the world’s largest “How To” book. I have used it to teach myself skills from grant writing to jumping a dead car battery to building websites to baking vegan cakes. As someone who is learning to write grants, you will find a wealth of information online on best practices. A google search will turn up an overwhelming number of websites that are relevant, so I have pared down a list of seven high quality grant writing tutorials online. Here they are:

2. Minnesota Council on Foundations
A tutorial on writing a success grant proposal that breaks down the proposal section by section. A great place to start for the beginner grant writer.
3. Wisconsin Arts Board
This article, Ten Common Grant Writing Problems, is a good reminder for grant writers of all levels and for those writing grants for any subject. Here is an excerpt from the article:

4. Grant Writing Course by Joyce McLaughlin
These are notes of the grant writing discussion section led by Prof. Joyce McLaughlin at the Julia Robinson conference held at MSRI on July 1, 1996. After an introductory discussion on the participants and general funding sources to consider, the group discussed various issues related to preparing a proposal, submitting a proposal, and specific NSF programs.
5. Grants Information Collection at University of WisconsinThis website has a wealth of information on grant, grant writing, and how to locate grant funding. The following web site offer excellent guidelines for grant proposal writing. Some include advice on letters of inquiry and sample proposals as well.
6. Writing Winning Proposals, An Introduction
From the ASME, this Module is Part 1 of a three-part series on proposal writing. This part introduces you to the processes and procedures for writing winning proposals. Part 2 discusses writing the technical proposal, and presents techniques that will ensure your proposal is responsive to your customer’s needs, is easy to follow, and builds on the strengths of your company. Part 3 tells you how to develop financial information for the cost proposal.
7. Corporation for Public Broadcasting Grant Proposal Writing Tips
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting evaluates hundreds of proposals each year for a variety of funding purposes. This publication is an easy guide to the basic elements of grant proposal writing and is offered to assist applicants to CPB and to other funding sources. It offers guideposts to help you through each stage of the process.
